Are the Golf GTI Performance or Lighting Packages Worth It?

Although the Golf R is technically the most performance-driven vehicle in the lineup, the one that we get the most requests for is actually the Golf GTI, as it is a bit more “tame” for drivers who don’t really want to go overboard with performance. On its own, the GTI is impressive, but there are two available packages that can be added to the hatchback that really help to set it apart: The Performance Package and Lighting Package. Today, we thought we would look at the price of each package and tell you if they are worth it.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Lighting Package

The Golf GTI comes standard with halogen bulbs, which are great for most drivers, but if you really want to increase visibility and have a set of headlights that make your presence known, the lighting package is definitely something that you will want to consider. It brings Bi-Xenon HID headlights to the hot hatch and also gives you an adaptive front-lighting system that turns the lights as you turn so that you always know what lies ahead. To top it off, there is a red line that runs through the lights for added GTI aesthetics.

If you’re interested in cost, the Lighting Package comes with a price tag of $995, which is definitely worth it when you consider the added visibility and the sportier look of the package. When you see a Golf GTI with the Lighting Package next to one without it, the difference between the two is immediately obvious.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance Package

One of the biggest reasons that people decide on the Golf GTI is because of its performance, so it really is no surprise that this is an available option. The Performance Package increases the overall horsepower from 210 to 220, which on its own, probably isn’t enough to justify the nearly $1,500-dollar price tag, but the Performance Package tosses in a few other upgrades that help to boost the overall performance.

The Performance Package also tosses in larger vented disc brakes as well as a limited-slip differential. The former helps to provided added stopping power, which can really come in handy if you plan to track your GTI, and the latter helps to transfer engine torque when wheel slip is detected. If there is ever a loss of traction, this feature makes it almost impossible to detect, as it responds immediately. It’s a feature that must be experienced to fully understand, but in our eyes, it makes the cost of the package worth it alone.
